Personal Statement

I am a hardworking, reliable and motivated individual. I work well on my own and within a team environment. I enjoy a challenge and always interested in new experiences. I would describe myself as a relaxed individual with a good sense of humour and easy to get along with. I have good people skills and I am confident and polite when dealing with the public.

As part of my gap year in January 2015 I travelled to Fernie in Canada to take part in an eleven-week snowboard instructor course with the organisation Nonstop, this is where I gained my CASI Level 1, Level 2 and Park Level 1 qualifications. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

During my seasons as a snowboard instructor at Thredbo (Australia) and NZSki (New Zealand) I gained a lot of insightful experience into the snow sports industry and many professional connections and lifelong friends. As a result, during my second year studying Meteorology at University I realised that I wanted to dedicate all my time and resources to furthering my snowsports instructing career and left to pursue this pathway. This led me to Grouse Mountain (Canada) where I worked for two seasons as a snowboard instructor in the winter and a zipline adventures guide in the summer. I was promoted to Lead Snowboard Instructor and gained my CASI Level 3 qualification in my second season. I then continued to do volunteer work during my third year at Grouse Mountain whilst I remained in the country due to travel restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

I continue to be fully committed to a mountain sport orientated lifestyle. I am currently working towards my CASI Level 4 snowboard instructor qualification or equivalent and intend to continue to develop in the profession aiming to ultimately obtain my Level 4 instructor-evaluator’s certification or equivalent.

Ever since spending two weeks snowboarding in Niseko in 2017 I have wanted to return to Japan. Because of this I have made an effort to become familiar with the Japanese language. This awoke a new passion in me and after thoroughly enjoying a mix of professional and self-teaching over the last year and a half I am on track to complete the JLPT N4 test this summer in 2022; with intentions to continue until I am awarded JLPT N1 standard!

Other Interests and Achievements

I am a keen bass player and whilst in the Vancouver, Canada in 2021 I was the bassist in the band Collision Course and released both a music video and EP on Spotify. I still really enjoy playing bass in my free time and take the opportunity to play local gigs and jam with friends whenever I can.

In the summer of 2012, I embarked on a trip to South Africa where I aided an organisation called Re-Build. Through teamwork, our task was to build, from scratch, a habitable home for a family in need in the suburbs of Johannesburg. We also had the opportunity to help at a local school organising football matches between the kids and ourselves. This was one of my most memorable experiences of the trip. Being part of a community that all pulled together to achieve a seemingly unrealistic outcome made this trip one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

In addition to my snowboarding instructor qualifications, working internationally as an instructor has given me the opportunity to live and experience the culture in incredible locations such as New Zealand, Australia, Canada, French Alps and even Japan! This has helped me realise that a mountain orientated lifestyle is definitely the direction I want to take with my life and will continue to pursue doing so.
