Please accept this as a joint application for Andy Guest & Jane Guest
After lengthy and wide ranging teaching careers it has always been a long planned aim to retire from the teaching ‘chalkface’ early to pursue our love of skiing and travelling.
We have both always been involved in outdoor work and education, be it on the river, sea, mountain or ski slopes.
Andy formally as a Director of Sport and Head of Department has always been heavily involved in competing, coaching, teaching and coordination of sports programs with pupils, colleagues in schools and alongside external organisations. This has been done successfully over two UK schools with success at both domestic and international level.
Jane, although principally a maths teacher, has spent years promoting the outdoor world in the guise of the Duke of Edinburgh program and other school based initiatives, taking a lead role in Outdoor Education for entire year group cohorts. In addition Jane was heavily involved in the pastoral aspects of the school being a Head of Year for over 15 years, supporting cohorts of 100+ teenagers with their academic, organisational skills and looking after their welfare.
Key to these various roles has been an ability to build an enthusiastic atmosphere within a team of colleagues and students; developing a passion to pass on knowledge and expose pupils to a wide variety of experiences that both challenge and encourage individuals to explore routes to really push and harness their personal characteristics.
In terms of skiing, we have both worked for the UK company Ski Astons for over 30 years. As a school ski specialist provider the majority of trips have run during our school holidays, enabling us to follow a passion for skiing, whilst still working full time as teachers. We have both worked as ski party leader running over 50 school trips for our own schools but also, instructing, resort repping and Andy as senior instructor, all roles giving us extensions of experiences of the ski industry from both sides of the fence.
The majority of our experience has been in Austria, principally in the Zillertal valley, Zell am See and the Wilderkaiser regions. Andy initially qualified through a formal extensive Austrian Ski School qualification in 1989, using this ticket until converting to the American system in 2011 PSIA 1 and in 2017 PSIA 2. In addition Andy has attended Ski Astons training clinic weeks held every year in October in Stubai, Austria. One aim over the 2023-24 season would be to take my PSIA level 3 or equivalent.
Jane qualified as a Alpine ski leader in 1995. ( This qualification was designed for teacher and youth leaders to take student skiing outside of formal lessons. With the aim to build on the skills they had covered as an extension of their lessons.) Although not initially working directly as an instructor, through the role of a teacher on school trips or as a ski representative for Ski Astons, she gained a vast bank of experience as a trouble shooter to get pupils who were falling behind back up to the level of the group and skiing and safely managing pupils whilst not in lessons. With the planned retirement from being a maths teacher, she has now formalised this by achieving her ski instructors qualification PSIA level 1 and has worked the 2022-23 season as an instructor in her own right.
Her main involvement as a ski rep has been the coordination of the various ski groups in the valley liaising with party leaders, senior ski instructors, hoteliers and the implementation of the apres ski program for large groups.
